Reformation Day Resources: October 31st

October 31st is Reformation Day, a day to celebrate Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, or the movement that led reformers to break away from the Catholic Church. Teach your upper elementary students about this important day with fun and engaging activities that will help them to retain and retell what they've learned.

I've compiled a list of suggested books (Amazon affiliate links), kid-friendly YouTube videos, and a packet of print-and-go resources to help you in planning your study of this very important topic.
Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed the World is a wonderful picture book that explains Luther's courageous acts and the importance of Reformation Day, all in kid-friendly terms.

The Adventures of Martin Luther is an excellent option for those teaching young children about Martin Luther's stand for what he believed to be true, according to the Bible.

Here are a couple of kid-friendly Youtube videos about Martin Luther and the start of the Protestant Reformation:
Martin Luther, the 95 Theses, and the Birth of the Protestant Reformation (length 11:44)
The Protestant Reformation Explained (length 7:31)

Here's a clip from the movie Luther - where he nails the 95 Theses on the door of the church and the after-effects
Luther's 95 Theses (length 4:33)

If you're looking for some hands-on comprehension activities to use after your study of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, then I have the just-right resource for you!
It's geared towards upper elementary students (grades 3-6) but could be used with younger or older students - you'll just need to lend support to your little ones. Older students could benefit from this resource - they could even dig deeper and do research on their own, enhancing the study.

This print-and-go packet would also work well in a Sunday School classroom or homeschool setting. Complete teacher/student directions are included on every page.

I've also included some sample pictures:
Interactive Notebook Foldables are such a fun and engaging way for your students to practice, retain, and show what they've learned about a topic. After completing their lap book, I always have my students take them home and explain each flap to someone in their family. As teachers we know that the best way to master a subject is to teach it to someone else - this connects the family to the classroom and helps solidify the information in the students' mind.

Happy Reformation Day, everyone!

Kindness Rocks: An Easy Tutorial

My MOPS group did a fun craft project this week and I wanted to share it with you all - it's a wonderful (and oh-so-easy!) idea that you can use with your students or your personal kiddos.
Kindness Rocks have become a growing trend across the country (and even the world!). They are a great and easy way to brighten up someone’s day in an unexpected way! The idea behind kindness rocks is simple: decorate a rock with an inspirational message and then leave it in a public place for others to find!

You never know when your rock will be just what someone needs to see that day. It will no doubt put a smile on their face. Some of you moms may have already seen Kindness Rocks while you are out at your local parks or favorite public places. It's a great way to spread kindness around our communities! Plus it proves an awesome discussion starter with our class or our personal kiddos.

Here are the supplies you will need:
  • Rocks (River rocks work best!) You can buy a 5 lb. bag on Amazon for only $10
  • Craft or Spray paint in whatever color you want your background to be
  • Paint Pen (optional, but I highly recommend - it works best for writing on smaller rocks)
  • Acrylic Craft paint and paint brush for painting your message and designs
  • Optional: Modge Podge or any clear sealer to give your kindness rocks maximum weather protection!
*These links are Amazon affiliate links - they help keep this blog up and running :)

Once you've gathered all of your materials, the process is very easy!
1. Spray paint your rock
2. Use the acrylic paint or a paint pen to write an inspiration message. Need ideas? Check out this list of 200 Positive Sayings
3. Add some doodles and designs
4. Go on a walk and place the rocks (in a public place) for others to find them!

A big thanks to our Crafts Coordinator, Stephanie, for planning this fun project!

I took my toddler on a walk and we placed these at a park near our house:

Now, when we're out and about, I'll be on the lookout for these fun and inspirational rocks!

This would be a really fun and easy project to do with your students - you could set them out around the school grounds or send the kids home with rocks to disperse in their neighborhoods. We can spread kindness, one rock at a time! :)

Here is some more rock inspiration - samples from my friends!

Additional Resources for Inspiration:

Happy painting!
If you choose to do this project with your class or at home, I'd love to hear about it! Send me pictures of your rocks and I'll feature them on my blog :)

These FREE “Pumpkin Grams” are a fun way to spread kindness this Halloween season! These note cards will brighten anyone’s day – and with so many templates to choose from, you will be able to spread cheer everywhere!

In my classroom I had the students draw the name of a classmate and fill out a Pumpkin Gram to give them on Halloween. It was a special way to make each student feel appreciated and valued.
I also had them fill one out to bring home – for either a parent or a sibling. With all the excitement of receiving candy on Halloween, it helped spur a discussion of how the people in our lives are important - they truly are a "sweet treat!"
